The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has claimed that it is working hard on a solution to end the suspended 2019-20 Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL).
Like other major leagues around the world, the NPFL was halted in March due to the coronavirus pandemic. But while other countries have managed to resume football activities, Nigeria remains uncertain of a way forward in this regard, as Covid-19 infections continue to rise.
The chairman of the Presidential Task Force on Covid-19 and secretary to the federal government, Boss Mustapha, recently stated that restarting sporting activities is something they are “not excited about”.
This has led the League Management Company (LMC) to propose four options to end the league, one of which is a point-per-game (PPG) method.
In a vote last weekend, the 17 chairmen of the Club Owners Association voted in favour of the PPG method and that there should not be promotion or relegation of any clubs.
Yet the NFF has stated that this is not the end of the story, with consultations still ongoing, and has asked for the football community’s patience.
“The Nigeria Football Federation has declared that wide consultation is still ongoing as to the format and pattern of foreclosing the 2019/2020 Football Season, including that of the Nigeria Professional Football League, NPFL,” read a statement from the NFF.
Should the PPG method be adopted, Plateau United would be crowned champions and be joined in the 2020-21 CAF Champions League by Rivers United.
