Nemanja Matic has agreed a new three-year deal at Manchester United, which keeps the midfielder at the club until 2023.

The Serbian's Old Trafford career looked to be nearing its end in January with the midfielder open to leaving during the winter window but he forced his way back into manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's plans after a string of impressive performances in the early part of 2020 during the absence of the injured Paul Pogba and Scott McTominay.

In March, United triggered a one-year option in Matic's previous contract and began discussions on an improved deal.

"I am very happy that I will continue to be part of this great club," 31-year-old Matic told the club's website.

"As a player, I still have a lot more to give and achieve in my career and to do that with Manchester United will be a huge honour.

"This is a really exciting team to be part of, we have a good balance of youth and experience within the squad and there is great comradery amongst the group.

"This is a key part of the season and we are playing well. We will continue to fight to finish the season on a high and make our amazing supporters proud."

Solskjaer added: "I am delighted that Nemanja has signed a new contract, I know his experience, professionalism and leadership will be invaluable to this young talented group.

"We have great strength in midfield and Nemanja's attributes are a key part of that. Nemanja has been here for three seasons now and really understands the values of playing for Manchester United.

"He remains hugely ambitious and determined which will be vital as we look to achieve our aims over the coming years."

Matic has been a key figure in United's impressive form since the Premier League's restart, coming off the bench against Tottenham before starting in each of their last three league victories.

He joined United from Chelsea in 2017 following three-and-a-half years at Stamford Bridge. Matic has since featured 114 times for United, scoring four goals.

‘VAR Is Ruining Football!’ – Fury Over Disallowed Kane Goal

‘VAR Is Ruining Football!’ – Fury Over Disallowed Kane Goal

Ex-Tottenham star Jamie Redknapp has expressed his belief that “VAR is ruining football” after seeing a Harry Kane goal against Sheffield United disallowed due to Lucas Moura’s alleged handball in the build-up.

Spurs travelled to Bramall Lane on Thursday to take on the Blades in a must-win encounter, buoyed after a 2-0 victory against West Ham last time out.

However, they found themselves 1-0 down after a tight opening 30 minutes, with Sander Berge making the breakthrough with a neat finish past Hugo Lloris in the Tottenham net.

Jose Mourinho’s men responded quickly, and thought they had levelled the scores when Kane found the net following a mazy run from Moura in midfield.

Unfortunately for the visitors, the England international’s effort was chalked off after a VAR review, with Moura adjudged to have handled the ball as he went down under a challenge just outside the box.

Replays showed that the Brazilian wasn’t even looking at the ball, which seemed to deflect off his back rather than his arm, but referee Michael Oliver called for play to resume from a goal kick rather than the centre circle.

Redknapp was fuming with the decision at half-time, and insisted that changes must be made to reduce the number of frustrating technology-related incidents in the Premier League.

The former Tottenham midfielder said: “This is one of the worst decisions I’ve ever seen, I can honestly say, since VAR was introduced,” he said, speaking as a pundit on Sky Sports. “I get the letter of the law but we have to show common sense.

“A player’s [Moura] been fouled. When you fall over you have to put your arms out to protect yourself. He’s been fouled by three players there, you can see it’s an obvious foul. The ball then ricochets on to his arm, it falls to harry Kane who obviously finishes pretty well.

“Why can’t we show common sense at times like this? I get it’s difficult for Michael Oliver. He’s the best referee in the Premier League and he’s probably thinking ‘what do I do? It’s the letter of the law’. It’s ruining football.”

‘Willian Would Be A Wonderful Fit For Arsenal’

Chelsea are likely to allow Willian to join a main Premier League rival this summer, according to Dennis Wise, who admits the midfielder “would be a wonderful fit for Arsenal”.

Willian has been a key member of Chelsea’s senior squad since being snapped up from Anzhi Makhachkala in 2013, racking up over 300 appearances for the club in all competitions.

41 of those have been made this season, with the Brazilian managing to contribute 10 goals and seven assists to the Blues’ cause from the middle of the park.

Willian has agreed a short-term contract extension which will see him remain at Stamford Bridge until the end of the season, which has only just resumed following a three-month hiatus caused by the coronavirus outbreak.

The 31-year-old has been offered the chance to sign a new two-year deal beyond that, but he is holding out for an extra year, and could end up walking away from the club as a free agent in August if no compromise is reached.

Although Wise would prefer to see Willian move abroad if he does leave the Bridge, he concedes that the experienced playmaker would be an ideal signing for Chelsea’s London rivals Arsenal.

When asked to discuss the prospect of an influential figure joining either the Gunners or Manchester United, the ex-Blues midfielder told Stadium Astro: “Well, I wouldn’t want him to go to any of them, I’ve got to say because it’ll be competition for Chelsea. Go to Italy please, Willian. Go away.

“I think he’d be a good fit for anyone; Arsenal, I think he’d be a wonderful fit for them. That’s the sad thing about it, we’ll let him go to an opposition who wants to compete.

“We have to replace him with more, we have replaced him but we will [need] a lot more because we’ll be depending on only two when you want more.

LACKLUSTRE! Liverpool Arrived With No Beers In Their Blood – Guardiola

Pep Guardiola insisted that “Liverpool arrived with no beers in their blood” after Manchester City’s victory over the Premier League champions at Etihad Stadium.

City put the Reds to the sword in Thursday night’s top of the table clash, running out 4-0 winners thanks to efforts from Kevin De Bruyne, Raheem Sterling, Phil Foden and an Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain own goal.

Liverpool started the game well, with Mohamed Salah coming closest to opening the scoring when he struck the post, but the momentum of the match quickly changed after City were awarded a penalty.

Joe Gomez left the referee with no choice but to point to the spot after bringing down Sterling in the box, and De Bruyne stepped up to cooly slot the ball past Reds number one Alisson from 12 yards.

Sterling doubled the home side’s lead when he finished off a quick break, before Foden’s superb individual effort put City 3-0 up right on half-time.

The England international beat Allison again in the 66th minute, but Oxlade-Chamberlain was credited with the goal after seeing his attempted clearance find its way into the back of the net.

City were good value for their comprehensive victory in the end, while Liverpool seemed to suffer a hangover of sorts after a week of celebrations on Merseyside.

Jurgen Klopp’s men were officially crowned Premier League winners following Chelsea’s win over City last Thursday, but Guardiola does not believe that his side came up against a below-par Reds outfit at the Etihad.

He told reporters post-match: “We beat the champions, an extraordinary team. We are brave to play, they are brave to play.

“My team I like every single game. We tried to play football, take risks. The best team I have ever faced in my life at high pressing.

TRANSFER LATEST!! Arteta Puts Up Guendouzi & Torreira, Others For Sale

Arteta is preparing for his first summer transfer market as Gunners’ boss but might be limited to loans and free transfers unless he can raise funds via sales.

Arsenal’s transfer kitty will be boosted if they qualify for either the Champions League or Europa League.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan has already joined Roma on a permanent deal and Mesut Ozil continues to be linked with a move away.

But Arteta wants to reshuffle his squad further and is looking to offload left-back Kolasinac and some of the seven center-backs at the club, along with Guendouzi and Torreira.

Kolasinac has endured a mixed spell in north London since his move from Schalke in 2017 and neither Guendouzi nor Torreira have convinced Arteta that they have long-term futures at Arsenal.

Liverpool Have To Spend After Winning Premier League Title – Fowler

Liverpool will be aware of the need to further bolster their ranks in the next transfer window, says Robbie Fowler, with the Reds legend saying he would be “amazed” if Jurgen Klopp does not spend.

Those at Anfield have suggested that a quiet window is on the cards after wrapping up a Premier League title triumph.

Klopp has guided his side to the top of domestic, continental and global games, with there seemingly little room for improvement within his squad.

The general consensus is that Liverpool will find it difficult to bring in any ready-made starters.

There have, however, been plenty of calls for greater depth to be added to the Reds’ ranks, with Klopp considered to be in need of attacking alternatives to Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino.

He has stopped short of joining any early bidding wars, such as that which saw Chelsea land Timo Werner, but Fowler believes the German will be tempted into the market at some stage.

The Liverpool icon told Premier League Productions after seeing the newly-crowned kings of England humbled 4-0 by Manchester City in their first outing since securing the title:

“Listen, he [Klopp] knows what his players are.

“I would be amazed if he isn’t looking at the transfer window anyway.

“We know as players ourselves that if you’ve got aspirations of winning leagues, you’ve got to go and sign players.

“Just because you’ve won the Premier League, that doesn’t mean you’re happy with the squad. You’ve always got to grow.

“When you think of Man City, they’re going to lose [David] Silva, [Sergio] Aguero could be coming towards the twilight of his career, they’ve lost [Leroy] Sane, [Benjamin] Mendy isn’t reliable because of his injuries, they’re going to go out and sign players.

“Any time you want to stay at the top, you’ve got to bring players in.

“The teams behind you are going to bring players in, so if you’re not signing players, you’re not standing still – you’re going backwards.”

Nigerians to watch this weekend

  1. Wilfred Ndidi

Leicester City’s poor run of results continued in midweek as they lost 2-1 at Everton, extending their winless run to three games.

Ndidi was inadvertently culpable in Wednesday’s defeat, getting penalised for handball to concede a penalty which saw the visitors fall 2-0 behind.

Kelechi Iheanacho halved the deficit, but Brendan Rodgers’ side couldn’t pull level, and one point from a possible nine will worry the Northern Irish manager.

The Foxes play host to a Crystal Palace side that have fallen to defeats in successive games against Liverpool and Burnley, which ought to give the East Midlands side some belief before kick-off.

A defeat at the King Power Stadium could see Leicester drop to fourth if Chelsea beat Watford and level with Manchester United and Wolverhampton Wanderers if both sides defeat Bournemouth and Arsenal respectively.

  2. Odion Ighalo

    Odion Ighalo

Given the struggles of Bournemouth in avoiding the drop, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer could be tempted to start the Nigerian for the first time in the Premier League when the Cherries travel to Manchester United on Saturday.

Ighalo’s netted in four successive starts for the Red Devils and will fancy himself against a defence that leaked four goals against Newcastle United in the previous gameweek.

Eddie Howe’s side have lost six of their last seven games and observers aren’t giving them a chance at an in-form United side at Old Trafford.

  3. Semi Ajayi

    Semi Ajayi

West Bromwich Albion secured a huge 3-0 win over Sheffield Wednesday on Wednesday, as they returned to winning ways after a four-match run without success.

Ajayi, a near ever present in the side this season, was a late substitute in the encounter but could return to the line-up against Hull City this weekend.

Slaven Bilic’s side are huge favourites to secure a win over the Tigers, who finally ended a 14-match winless run in all competitions with victory against Middlesbrough on Thursday.

  4. Samuel Chukwueze
    Getty Images

    Samuel Chukwueze

The wideman was outstanding in a 10-minute run-out in Villarreal’s 2-0 victory over Real Betis, threatening with his skill and creativity and was unlucky to not register an assist having set up two clear-cut chances.

Villarreal host an unsteady Barcelona side knowing full well a victory could take them into fourth spot if Sevilla fail to beat Eibar.

Despite a seven-game unbeaten run, Barca’s recent struggles will give the Yellow Submarine, unbeaten in six La Liga games, significant self-belief before Sunday’s encounter.

  5. Ola Aina
    Getty

    Ola Aina

The wing-back has started successive games against Cagliari and Lazio, so there’s an expectation to see him play from the off when Torino travel to battle rivals Juventus on Saturday afternoon.

Moreno Longo’s side have won just one of their last 11 games in all competitions and are massive underdogs to shock the Old Lady in the 202nd Turin derby.

Maurizio Sarri’s side will want to secure a win to extend their lead over title contenders Lazio to seven points, with Simeone Inzaghi’s team facing AC Milan hours after the final whistle at the Juventus Stadium.

  6. Henry Onyekuru

  7. Galatasaray’s draw with Istanbul Basaksehir extended their run without success to five, which saw them fail to close the gap on the leaders to five points.

Onyekuru and co. face second-placed Trabzonspor in gameweek 30, knowing full well a victory could keep really slim hopes of retaining the Super Lig alive if they secure a victory.

The inside forward hasn’t been on top of his game since the league’s restart, failing to deliver anywhere near his best in the three games on the trot.

Will Fatih Terim’s troops finally record a win after a poor run of results in the league?

Sane seals €49m Bayern Munich move as Man City let German winger head home

The highly-rated forward, who had spent four seasons at the Etihad Stadium, has signed a five-year contract with the Bundesliga champions

Leroy Sane has completed a move to Bayern Munich from Manchester City  for an initial €49m (£44.7m/$55m), with that amount potentially rising to €60 million (£55m/$67m) through add-ons.

The 24-year-old winger, who had spent four seasons at the Etihad Stadium, has signed a five-year contract with the Bundesliga champions.

A switch to the Allianz Arena for sane had been in the pipeline for some time, with Bayern first making their interest known during the summer of 2019.

Sane has, however, worked his way back to full fitness and will now be returning to his homeland to open the next chapter in his career.

He has told Bayern’s “FC Bayern is a great club with big goals and these goals suit me as well. I'm looking forward to the new challenge and can't wait to train with the team.

“I know Hansi Flick from the Under-21 national team, we had a very good relationship there. I want to win as many trophies as possible with FC Bayern, and the  Champions League is the top priority.”

Bayern’s CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said on acquiring the services of a top target: “We’re very happy to welcome Leroy Sane to FC Bayern.

“He is an outstanding player who has proven his qualities over the past few years, especially in the national team.

"Our goal is to gather the best German players at FC Bayern and the signing of Leroy emphasises this goal. I would like to congratulate Hasan Salihamidzic on successfully concluding the transfer.”

Salihamidzic added: “We’re delighted Leroy is to be a Bayern player. Leroy is a difference-maker and will strengthen our team with his quality.

“With Serge Gnabry, Kingsley Coman and Leroy, we’re now even better equipped at a very high level in the wide positions that are important for our game.

“I would like to thank Manchester City for the trusting and constructive negotiations. I would also like to thank our president and chairman of the supervisory board, Herbert Hainer, who supported us with this transfer right from the start under the difficult circumstances of coronavirus.”

Sane took in 135 appearances for City on the back of a 2016 transfer from Schalke, with 39 goals and 45 assists recorded across 135 appearances.

He helped the Blues to two Premier League titles, an FA Cup triumph and two League Cup successes.

On parting with an exciting talent, former Bayern boss Pep Guardiola told City’s “We wish Leroy all the best in this new chapter of his career.

“Leroy has been part of one of the most special periods in this club’s history and he leaves with the best wishes of everyone here at Manchester City.”

Director of football Txiki Begiristain added: “From arriving as a fledgling young talent four years ago, we are proud of the contribution Leroy has made since joining Manchester City. He leaves with many friends and fond memories of his time at the Etihad.”

TED THE RED Man Utd teenager Teden Mengi is rapid defender and star in the making who has been fast-tracked into first-team squad

THERE'S a buzz around Manchester United's Carrington training ground, and that's not just because the club look like they're heading in the right direction.

A steady crop of exciting youngsters are beginning to take centre stage under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, as the Norwegian promised in his mandate when he first took the job.

And joining a stream of talent that includes the likes of Mason Greenwood, Brandon Williams, and Tahith Chong is a centre half quicker than all of them.

Teden Mengi turned 18 while the country was in lockdown.

When football returned, the rapid defender found himself with the senior squad alongside United luminaries Marcus Rashford and Jesse Lingard, who themselves made the leap from youth to first team.

Better still, he left an impression on Solskjaer by recording the fourth fastest running speed in the whole squad.

Leicester City’s Ndidi reveals Rodgers’ impact on his development

The Nigeria international has praised the influence of the Northern Irish tactician on his progress and hopes to get better under him

Wilfred Ndidi has revealed Leicester City manager Brendan Rodgers has helped him to grow since his arrival at the Premier League club.

The Nigeria international has developed into one of the best defensive midfielders in the English top-flight since joining the Foxes from Belgian side Genk in 2017.

The 23-year-old has had a number of managers since his arrival at the King Power Stadium, including Claudio Ranieri, Craig Shakespeare and Claude Puel.

The Super Eagles star, however, feels he experienced more growth and understanding of the game under the Northern Irish tactician.

“When Brendan came, I saw myself growing and understanding where I can actually grow to,” Ndidi told LCFCQ, as per the club website.

“It’s hard to explain. For me, I could see a path, I could see things differently. Growing in Leicester, I’m trying to understand the game, and now, I can understand it in different directions.

“He’s given me a wider view of where this is supposed to go to make me even better. The statistics are okay, but I can be better than that – that’s the way I can explain it.”

Ndidi has featured 31 times for the King Power Stadium outfit in this campaign across all competitions under the tutelage of the former Liverpool manager.

The midfielder currently ranks third in Premier League top tacklers with 96 tackles behind teammate Ricardo Pereira and Manchester United’s Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

His solid defensive performances ensured the Foxes’ third place on the Premier League table, behind leaders Liverpool and Manchester City.

Leicester are winless in their last two games after recording draws with Watford and Brighton & Hove Albion.

Ndidi, who has made 113 league appearances since joining the Foxes, will hope to help his side bounce back to winning ways when they take on Chelsea on Sunday.

Nigeria at the 2010 World Cup: A decade of regret?

The squad that Nigeria took to the 2010 World Cup is quickly dismissed by supporters, and understandably so, considering the tournament was one of the Super Eagles’ worst moments on the grandest stage of all.

They’d fallen at the first hurdle in 2002—albeit in a much tougher group—and missed out on the 2006 event, but the 2010 failure casts a much larger shadow.

It was a campaign marred by controversy, not least the decision to axe Shuaibu Amodu ahead of the tournament and appoint Lars Lagerback, who is perhaps harshly maligned, but ultimately didn’t get the best out of the squad.

Considering the tournament was the first on African soil, it was supposed to have been a chance for the continent’s sides to show what they could do.

Nigeria had the talent—and the draw—to reach the knockouts, but lacking organisation, seemingly missing some structure, with discipline lamentably lacking, they crashed out, taking just one point from their three group games.

John Obi Mikel’s injury clearly didn’t help, but instead, what should have been a glorious return to the World Cup is best remembered by Sani Kaita’s needless red card—for lashing out in the Greece game—and, of course, that close-range miss by Yakubu with the goal gaping against South Korea.

It didn’t matter that The Yak later netted a penalty to rescue the point, he was ridiculed, the Super Eagles were maligned, then-President Goodluck Jonathan had seen enough, and duly suspended the national side for two years.

Mercifully, that decision was repealed, and two and a half years later, the Eagles’ post-World Cup renaissance was completed by the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations success, and Stephen Keshi’s exciting new generation.

Ultimately, Keshi’s Eagles followed up that 2013 success by reaching the knockouts of the 2014 World Cup, finally laying to rest the spectre of the 2010 failure, but a case could also be made that even this talented crop didn’t realise their potential—and they missed out on both the 2015 and 2017 Afcon tournaments.

However, what they did do, definitively, was help Nigeria forget about the failure of 2010.

Remarkably, only four of Lagerback’s squad were present when the Eagles won the 2013 Afcon, and of those, Ideye Brown didn’t even get on the pitch at the World Cup in South Africa.

Of Lagerback’s team, only Vincent Enyeama, Elderson Echiejile and Joseph Yobo were present at the Nations Cup.

Echiejile had been promoted from back-up to first choice at the expense of Taye Taiwo, while Yobo was ‘demoted’ during the Afcon from starting centre-back to an option from the bench.

Of course, Keshi’s side achieved greater success in Africa and globally, but man for man, were they really as good as the forgotten generation of 2010?

At full-back, Echiejile replaced Taiwo, but he could never manage the former AC Milan man’s exploits at club level, and didn’t offer his explosiveness nor his powerful shooting.

On the right, Chidi Odiah was an excellent talent before injury undermined his progress, and won an eye-catching six European league titles after leaving Julius Berger.

The 36-year-old never gets the credit his talent deserves, and was a far more natural option at right-back than his successor, Efe Ambrose, whose versatility nonetheless made him useful for Keshi.

In defence, Yobo and Danny Shittu were superseded by Kenneth Omeruo and Godfrey Oboaboa, whose understanding and even quality in possession was better than what we saw from the previous pairing, even if ex-Everton defender Yobo remains the outstanding player of the quartet.

Of course, Mikel’s return to the side immediately improved the midfield, and he grew into becoming an Eagles legend while Dickson Etuhu—a powerful if limited player—was overlooked by Keshi, even if he continued to play in the top two divisions of English football until 2014.

Ogenyi Onazi stepped into the side at the expense of Lukman Haruna, and represented an ideal foil for Mikel, even if his ceiling wasn’t as high as his predecessor’s.

Haruna, old before his time, is still in his 20s, but has represented Nigeria just once since the defeat by Greece in 2010, with injuries and a loss of form completely undermining his potential.

What could the Eagles have achieved with Mikel and Haruna in the heart of the midfield together over the last decade?

Further forward, Keshi never truly got his striking options right with the Eagles; the likes of Sunday Mba, Nnamdi Oduamadi, Michael Uchebo, Joseph Akpala and Anthony Ujah were all given gametime without truly establishing themselves in the side for a long period.

Peter Odemwingie returned to the side to impress at the 2014 World Cup, although Nigeria rarely saw the best of a player who netted 30 goals for West Bromwich Albion across three seasons, while Ideye Brown and Emmanuel Emenike were both influential in the 2013 Afcon success without truly suggesting that they were the lethal finisher Nigeria craved.

It’s particularly up front that a whole swathe of Nigerian frontmen were discarded soon after the World Cup.

Nwankwo Kanu was already 33, and entering the final days of his storied career, but all of the other forwards could reasonably have hoped

to have still been in the squad for the 2014 World Cup.

Chinedu Obasi and Victor Obinna were 24 and 23 respectively, but the former hasn’t featured for the national side since 2011, while the latter has started just two Nigeria games since 2011, despite being given a handful of opportunities to impress under Keshi.

Obviously, injuries affected their progress, but Obasi was proving to be a consistent threat in the Bundesliga with Hoffenheim before the 2010 World Cup, and Obinna was once described by Jose Mourinho as one of Internazionale’s brightest prospects.

These two talents should have achieved so much more with the national side.

Similarly, Yakubu only played once more for Nigeria after that miss against South Korea, despite remaining a prolific scorer in England and China.

What of Obafemi Martins, only 25 at the World Cup?

Despite playing four times for Nigeria in the years after 2010, he’d never score for the national side again, and was rarely given a look-in by Keshi.

Some may argue that the successes of 2013 and 2014 fully justify the Big Boss’s decision to do away with the class of 2010.

However, there’s still a niggling sense that the Eagles could have made so much more of the talents who flopped in South Africa, a talented generation who were—almost to the man—largely resigned to the international scrapheap a decade ago this week.
